The federally-funded Cumberland Road began, in 1811, at a stone at Lot No. 1 on Greene St. in Cumberland, MD. The Road traveled up Greene St. through Sandy Gap to Gwynn's Tavern (later the Six-Mile House) in LaVale. Later, in 1835, the Road was re-routed through the Narrows and joined the original route at Gwynn's. The Road east of Cumberland, to Baltimore, was privately funded.
