The grade between here and Hopwood, often called the Uniontown Hill, is the heaviest grade on a trunk highway east of the Rocky Mts. The average grade from Hopwood to Summit is 9%, the maximum 11-1/4%. Over 25 motor car makers test cars for power and brakes on this hill. Many claim to have made this grade in high, but do not be disappointed over your car if it boils and finishes in second. It is a long deceptive grade; the best practice is to ascend and descend in second.
