The motorist driving westward from Uniontown to Wheeling will cover a distance of 68 miles. Fifty-three miles west of Uniontown completes the journey thru Pennsylvania, West Virginia being entered at that point. The country is more or less mountainous and grades are frequent, but as hard surfaced roads are continuous, exceptionally good time can be made. The Monongahela River, a tributary of the Ohio, is crossed twelve and one-half miles northwest of Uniontown, and in addition to this, many small streams will be found at various points thru the hilly country. Railroad crossings are frequent and motorists should be on the alert for approaching trains. Brownsville and Washington are the principal towns passed thru altho there are many other smaller towns but very few miles apart.
West Virginia is a remarkably scenic state. The Allegheny Mountains, the Appalachian Ranges and Big Stone Ridge Mountain chain give ruggedness and sublimity to its natural scenery, while numerous rivers and sparkling mountain creeks, abounding with fish of various kinds, add a pleasing variety to its vivid outdoor attraction. The Ohio River, a most majestic and lovely stream, flows thru Wheeling. The forests of West Virginia hold a myriad species of different trees, and are carpeted with wild flowers in the early spring and summer months. West Virginia was admitted to statehood in June, 1863. Its capital city is Charleston.~ So. Cal Auto Club Guide
